On-Bike Video Cameras

We at WWW.GSX-R1000.CO.UK are happy to endorse Motorsport Cameras and their full range of video products.

After much discussion within the forums regarding helmet / on-bike cameras I began to research into companies.

In the end it had to be Motorsport Cameras, why ? because they offer THE highest quality cameras on the World Wide Web, forget your 320 line cameras, even forget your 480 line cameras, these guys sell the 580TVL Camera kits and make all the others seam black and white in comparison !

Check the demonstration video to the right, see the clouds, the level of details and listen to the impressive level of sound.

Impressive isn't it, yet the demonstration video you see here is only half as good as the original footage, obviously I had to reduce quality and file size to be able to stream this on the Internet but even so the quality is still amongst the best I have ever seen.

Please Note : No laws were broken during the making of this demo.

Summary :

Whether you wish to record footage of the road for training purposes or of the race track, the Race Camera Pro seams to be the No.1 choice for professionals.

The benefits of the 580 over any other models are that it has 580 vertical lines on the chip set - basically the more lines the better the resolution.

The Camera is a Sony 580 TVL 1/3" CCD with a 4.3mm lens which is currently the best available on the market.

I couldn't fault this camera in terms of design, quality and ease of use, the audio is simply superb and the videos and sample images speak for themselves.

Motorsport Cameras also offer a wide range of accessories including cameras, camera mounts, digital video recorders etc - a complete one stop shop for on-bike video recording.

My only gripe about the Race Camera Pro is that I didn't get one sooner.

COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW
Motorsport Cameras - by Matt Pike

So ... who are Motorsport Cameras and what do they do ?

Motorsport Cameras are specialists in high quality colour miniature bullet cameras for motorsport and have been since 2001. They  including a range of mounts, digital video recorders and accessories.

What's a Race Camera Pro Pack ?

A Race Camera Pro pack is a top-of-the-range hi-resolution bullet type camera system which will allow you to capture exceptional quality video and audio footage. Everything from packaging to instruction details of this product oozes quality.

How do I Set up ? and what kind of recording device do I need ?

What's in the box ?

Installation

You have several installation options available to you which are detailed on Motorsport Cameras web site, however I chose to use the fixed mount as supplied with the original kit. In this instance I chose to install the fixed mount under the front fairing, I did this screwing the mount into the bottom of the plastic headlight, prior to this I added super glue to the base before it was screwed in which was precautionary and not really necessary as the screws did the job and the fixed mount was fitted solid.

Initially I was going to go with a helmet camera installation but having now seen the footage on-bike I won't be mounting this anywhere else, it give fantastic view of the road / track and is very entertaining when it comes to bends and wheelies.

The Road Test

Video - Having used cheaper versions in the past I wasn't sure what to expect with the Race Camera Pro previous cameras were susceptible to shaking and unreliable video footage. When I returned after my initial test run I was gob smacked at the level of detail, you would swear this was camcorder footage not video from a bullet camera, the view point from the fixed mount was also perfect with the horizon central to the captured video, and you can clearly see both lanes not just one.

Audio - I left the microphone in the rucksack as I didn't want to risk it getting wet, did this make a difference ? not a chance, the mic is very sensitive and even tucked away it still picked up all the noise from the engine and exhaust - perfect ! no weather issues to worry about.

Conclusion

Whether you ride on the road, or the race track, those of you who wish to video your riding for whatever purposes, look no further as this is a top piece of kit. The video footage you see here is reduced in quality for viewing and is only 50% as good quality as you get on the DV Camcorder, when you play this back on a DVD player you would swear it was filmed by a camcorder and not a bullet cam, this truly does give exceptional video and audio quality and well deserves its 5-Star rating.

Editors Note : Obviously neither WWW.GSX-R1000.CO.UK nor Motorsport Cameras condone speeding on a public highway and this Race Camera Pro is not designed for highway use, whatever you do with it neither of us will be held responsible.

Motorsport Cameras have been good enough to offer VIP GOLD MEMBERS a discount on the Motorsport Cameras and ALL Motorsport Cameras products - please see the forum Discounts section for further details.

Set-Up - The first thing you need to know about setting up this system is that its easy, just one AV wire into the AV socket on the camcorder with the rest of the wires colour coded, its a simple plug and play operation.

Recording - You basically have a few choices, one is to go with a hard drive type capture device, the other option is to use a DV Camcorder with A/V In enabled. In this instance I chose the Canon MV960, they cost just a couple of hundred quid brand new ! and prove a reliable data capture source, so far there has been no problems with capture with this setup in a backpack on-bike.

The whole kit comes in a really tidy box and is packaged well, in the box you will find as follows :

Wired Sony colour bullet camera (3" long)
 Miniature microphone
All video and audio leads required
 Fixed mount
 Battery pack (batteries not included)
 Full instructions
 12 month warranty
